Lancers complete series sweep
The Lancers took the finale of the rain-shortened series, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to secure the sweep.
Stellar pitching was once again on display as scoring runs came at a premium.
Steven Hernandez made his season debut, tossing 6.0 innings of one-run baseball. He collected nine strikeouts on the day, while scattering three hits and three walks to earn his first career victory.
Each team would score a run in the opening frame before both pitchers settled in to keep the score level at one until the final inning. Grace tallied first when Maximo De Leon came around to score. He reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single from Grant Hartley.
Over the next five innings, a combined eight hitters reached base safely with only one advancing past second base.
The final inning contained all of the excitement. Bradyn McIntosh got the rally going with a one-out single. He moved into scoring position and later stole third base to put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. After a Josh Cosme walk, Maximo De Leon smashed a two-RBI double to left field giving the Lancers a 3-1 advantage.
Hunter Schumacher would come on to pitch the bottom half of the seventh. The Trojans were able to muster a run to close the deficit, but Schumacher closed the door to nail down his first save of the year.
Hartley continued his hot start to the season, going 2 for 2 with a walk and an RBI. Sam Newkirk had a 2 for 3 day with one double, and McIntosh added two hits and a run scored.
The Lancers will be back in action down in the hills of Tennessee for a four-game series against Aquinas on Feb. 17-18.
