Poyner named Regional Assistant Coach of the Year
Jake Poyner of Grace's track and field/cross country team picked up a national honor on Friday.
Poyner was named the NAIA Men's Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The USTFCCCA honors both gender's top track athletes and field athletes, as well as the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
Poyner has guided the Grace middle distance and distance squad into national prominence. The Lancer men set school records in four events during the outdoor season and produced a total of seven NAIA national qualifying performances. In the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings, which take into account the top four performers from each institution, Grace ranks fourth in the NAIA in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 800.
Grace's distance and middle distance crew will have an impressive group of representatives compete at next week's NAIA National Championships, including athletes in the 800, 1,500, 5,000 and 4x800 relay. In addition to the men's success, the Lancer women will also have competitors in the 800, 1500 and 4x800 relay at the NAIA championships.
