Grace College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Grace tripped up by Foresters
The Grace softball team faced off against Huntington in a pivotal series on Friday afternoon at Coach Phil Dick Field.
The Foresters avenged an early sweep by the Lady Lancers, taking two from Grace on Friday by the scores of 2-0 and 15-4.
Game one of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel. For Grace, Jeri Ellis scattered four hits over seven innings with four strikeouts and zero walks. However, the Foresters were able to plate two runs to secure the victory.
The game was scoreless for four innings until the Foresters notched the go-ahead run on a home run. Huntington added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally.
Grace was unable to generate a response. The Lady Lancers had runners in scoring positions several times in the later innings, but the team could not find an RBI hit to move those runners.
Bree Gardinier batted 2 for 3 with a double, and Ellis hit 1 for 2 with a walk.
The second game saw 21 runs and 22 hits combine between the two teams. The game was back and forth across the first five innings.
Huntington built an early 3-0 lead, but Grace countered with four runs between the second and fourth innings to keep pace.
In the second inning, Jessica Kaurich walked and eventually scored on an error by the Foresters.
In the third, Cassandra Hayes's sacrifice fly allowed Montana Brincks to come home and score.
In the fourth, Kendra Arnold produced an RBI double. Taylor Hodgen followed soon after with an RBI single to pull Grace within one at 5-4.
Unfortunately for Grace, the Lady Lancers did not score again while Huntington's bats got red hot.
The Foresters racked up 10 runs on nine hits over the final two innings, pulling away for the victory to complete the sweep.
Kaurich walked twice and scored twice, and Arnold was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI.
Carly Ruiz and Emily Revercomb had singles in their pinch-hit appearances.
The Lady Lancers will have another home series — their fourth of the week — on Saturday. Grace will host Goshen for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Coach Phil Dick Field.
